Here is a shot of #463 before the restoration was completed. It looks like she is getting an all new tank on the tender and the carpenter has been busy rebuilding the cab. The photo was taken on July 17, 1993 outside the Chama engine house.
What a difference in size! It's interesting that the K27's where considered massive when they first arrived on the scene. This K37 makes it look quite small outside the Chama engine house on the 16th of September 1996.
Here is a shot of K37 #497 the first year after it arrived in Chama after being traded with #482. The photo was taken during a pre season special put on by Roy's Train World. The date is May 16, 1992 as the mixed train heads up the hill. It was a tough battle for #497 later that day as she was having trouble starting up after a photo shoot at the highway crossing below Cumbres. After backing up a few times and lots of sand on the track we finally started up with the maximum load for this engine on the hill.
It always seems to rain whenever I am in Silverton trying to photograph the trains pulling out. The afternoon storms are refreshing but cold at times. I just can't pass up the photo opportunities even though my wife thinks I am nuts. I really got drenched on this wet day of September 20, 1997. Everyone told me that picture taking is now being controlled in Silverton. Maybe that is why the crew kept asking me if I was supposed to be on board.
This time I had to brave the snow to get my Silverton shots. K36 #480 was in front of the Silverton Depot on September 18, 1997. A light dusting of snow in Silverton sure made the trip back to Durango a nail bitter. Several vehicles had slid off of the road as we headed back to the Narrow Gauge Convention in Durango.
It sure is good to see #482 back in service. I took many pictures of it in chama before it was traded to the D&SNG. This picutre was taken at the Silverton depot on September 20, 1996 on one of the rare occasions when I have been there on a sunny day.
